Tiny Tableau Tips - Round 8

As a reminder, our Tiny Tableau Tips blog posts are comprised of tips shared by others on social media that we are just providing a more permanent home for.  For more information on how #tinytableautips came to be, check out Round 1In Round 8, we will be featuring tips from Tore Levinsen (check him out at https://torelevinsen.com/)Rob TaylorCatherine CallahanMina Ozgenand Mehras Abdoli.

1) Rename Containers

Rob Taylor on Jul 4, 2023: I can't believe I have only just realised you can rename containers in your Tableau layout.

I'm a big fan of using containers but had always clicked on the dashboard to find the one I want in the hierarchy. Not anymore.

2) Refresh Thumbnails to Reduce Load Time

Catherine Callahan on Jul 11, 2023: refresh thumbnails in the sheet sorter view to refresh the data and SIGNIFICANTLY reduce the load time! Can confirm this works, and is hugely helpful when in dev.

3) Add Context to your Titles

Tore Levinsen on Jul 12, 2023: If you want to add more content to your titles, based on parameter or filter selections, edit your Title and go to the "Insert" button. Any dimension/measure/filter/parameter (and more) can be added to the title to add more content for your users in Tableau.

4) Ensure You Can Access All Marks

Mina Ozgen on Jul 18, 2023: Maps/scatter plots have some marks that are invisible & unhoverable as they sit behind other marks. Sort the dim field by your measure on size & you ensure marks are visible & hoverable.

5) Customizing Totals

Mina Ozgen on Aug 1, 2023: By leveraging Min([Dim])=Max([Dim]) OR Min!= Max we are able to isolate totals & choose what to display on them.

6) Make an Information Button

Mina Ozgen on Aug 8, 2023: My fav method doesn't require any data fields (or the rows/columns). Double click on the marks card and enter 'i'. Place this on text, make the mark a circle, format & add info in tooltip!

7) Copy & Paste Worksheets or Dashboards from Other Workbooks

Tore Levinsen on Aug 16, 2023: If   you have one sheet/dashboard you would like to use in another Tableau  workbook, right-click on the sheet name, Copy. Go to the other workbook,  click paste (on an any sheet). Not only is the sheet/dashboard copied, but also the connected data source.

8) Tooltips on BANs

Catherine Callahan on Aug 22, 2023: Just sharing something I like to do, which adds additional context to BANs.  Extra tip: use a character for a "bullet" effect.

9) ZN to Avoid Null when Aggregating

Mehras Abdoli: on Aug 25, 2023: This week, I came across a simple yet important use case for the ZN() function. If there are nulls in columns, adding their values directly may result in incomplete data. Wrap each column in a ZN() function to prevent this issue. Check out the example below.

10) Manage Permissions on Multiple Projects at the Same Time!!!

Mina Ozgen on Sep 6, 2023: Update Permissions on multiple projects at once.  Happy Admin-ing.

There you have it! Ten more fantastic tips from our amazing community!
