Tiny Tableau Tips - Round 10
As a reminder, our Tiny Tableau Tips blog posts are comprised of tips shared by others on social media that we are just providing a more permanent home for. For more information on how #tinytableautips came to be, check out Round 1.

1) Wash It Out! (Imagine you are singing Taylor Swift's Shake it Off)
Tore Levinsen on Dec 13, 2023: If you want a clean map for your vizz, you can remove the map layers. Uncheck everything in the map layers window or set Washout to 100%. This will leave only the outline of the mapped data (i.e. a country/state/region).
2) Refresh to Keep Formatting when Replacing Data
Tore Levinsen on Jan 10, 2024: A great tip if you want to replace your datasource in Tableau is to remember to "Refresh All Thumbnails" before the switch, to ensure (most) formatting stay in place. Right-Click on any sheet, select "Refresh All Thumbnails".
3) Just Move the Label
Mehras Abdoli on Jan 13, 2024: Did you know that when you hover over elements in the Format section of #Tableau, you'll see a tooltip with information about Style, Width, and Color?
4) Colored Unicode Characters
David Kelly on Jan 23, 2024: Not sure when they made this change but you can use colored unicode items in both custom formatting and dimension calculations and they retain their color!
5) Map Colors Before Fields Exist
Jacob Rothemund on Feb 1, 2024: dimension members match between dimensions in, when using "replace references", colour settings from the replaced field apply to your target field.You can use this with calc fields to define colours when they don't yet exist in your source!
6) Export Sheets & Dashboards
Tore Levinsen on Feb 21, 2024: If you want to export your Tableau worksheets to a new TWBX, just select one worksheet, dashboard or any combinations, using single select or multi-select. Right-click and Export. The worksheets and dashboards will then be saved in a new TWBX file on its own.
7) Drag & Drop Data Source
Felicia Styer on Apr 30, 2024: I picked this up today from Dennis Kao. You can drop a data file onto a sheet to quickly generate a data source!
8) Allow Selection by Category
Tore Levinsen on Jun 5, 2024: If you want to select matching values from a dimension in Tableau, click on the (now underlined) value on the tooltip. (Note that this is controlled by the "Allow selection by category" checkbox when modifying tooltips).
9) Drag Containers in Web Edit
Viviane Lefebvre on June 6, 2024: If I had to share one main reason I use Web authoring sometimes, it would definitely be the possibility to drag my containers wherever I want.
10) Viz in Tooltip Alignment
Tore Levinsen on Jul 3, 2024: If you have a Viz in Tooltip in Tableau, you can Center or Left/Right-Align it inside the tooltip. Just like the text in a tooltip window, it's as simple as highlighting the embedded code and align it to the center (or right/left) as you would do with text.
