The Words of Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” Speech

In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, I’ve created a simple visualization analyzing the words used in his “I Have a Dream” speech. To make the data more meaningful, I’ve eliminated extremely common and low meaning words—mostly pronouns (he, she, it), prepositions (at, from, after), conjunctions (and, but, so), and determiners (this, the, those). If you hover over a word, it will tell you how many times that word was used in the speech. Enjoy and let’s continue to do everything we can to keep King’s dream alive.

Note: Since I’m embedding this into my blog, the visualization here is sized down slightly. If your device can handle a higher resolution, I’d recommend viewing the full-size visualization here.

  1. You are sooo proficient with Tableau. I am building an automated site and would need to incorporate a Tableau dashboard to capture all the data.I think I will be consulting with you when I am ready
