Tiny Tableau Tips - Round 9

As a reminder, our Tiny Tableau Tips blog posts are comprised of tips shared by others on social media that we are just providing a more permanent home for.  For more information on how #tinytableautips came to be, check out Round 1

In Round 9, we will be featuring tips from Tore Levinsen (check him out at https://torelevinsen.com/), Mina OzgenCatherine CallahanMehras Abdoli, and Brittany Rosenau

1) Just Move the Label

Tore Levinsen on Sep 13, 2023: If you show labels in your viz in Tableau, but there is not room to show all, or you just want them to show somewhere without them overlapping (don't use "Allow labels to overlap other marks" option), you can just select, drag & move any labels around.

2) Sort Colors Using the Legend

Tore Levinsen on Sep 20, 2023: If you have a dimension as color in a viz in Tableau, those can be rearranged by moving the different items on the color legend. Ie. If I want "Central" to be the first region on the chart, I'll drag it to the end in the color legend.

3) Google Earth

Mina Ozgen on Oct 3, 2023: Extend spatial dashboards with Google Earth. Add URL actions, passing through lat+lon fields to add detailed satellite views for site reviews: https://earth.google.com/web/search/<Lat>,<Lon> .

4) Right-Click and Drag (we've done this before, but such a great technique)

Catherine Callahan on Oct 10, 2023: a reminder that you can right-click & drag date fields onto axes to define the date type. It'll save you about 2 clicks (it adds up!!)

5) Copy Desktop Version

Tore Levinsen on Oct 11, 2023: If you need the version of your Tableau Desktop, copy it from the "About Tableau" dialog box. Just open the box and use CTRL-C to copy the Tableau version number and then paste it anywhere you need, for example, writing an email to support.

6) Aggregation on Totals

Mehras Abdolion Oct 15, 2023: Did you know you can change the Column Grand Total Aggregation Type for each measure in Tableau?

7) Can't Edit Width & Height?

Mina Ozgen oNov 3, 2023: To wrap up the week, sharing a tip to help with formatting woes: Debugging Inability to Edit Width/Height:

Check if :

1. Item is in a container & set to "distribute evenly"

2. Item is floating

3. Item is in a tiled container

8) Color-Code Tabs to Untangle Filters

Brittany Rosenau on Nov 7, 2023: Using colored tabs can help you stay sane when detangling filters. In the "Apply Filters to Worksheets" dialogue box, the colors on the tabs are repeated in the window. I typically like to color all sheets that roll up into one dashboard the same color.

9) Tableau API for a Data Dictionary

Catherine Callahan This #TinyTableauTip is just a link to Anyalitica's blog on how using the Tableau api for a data dictionary! This saved me HOURS and took<1 hour to create!  For that I’m #thankful

Save this for later, trust me!

10) Add Circle Marks to a Line

Brittany Rosenau on Dec 11, 2023: Want to add circle markers to your lines in Tableau? That's hiding in the color section in the marks card. Don't ask how long that took me to find, I don't wanna talk about it 😅

There you have it! Ten more fantastic tips from our amazing community!

That's it until next time. Thanks to all of the people sharing tips and thanks for reading!
